Free crochet pattern: Herringbone phone cover (ENG + NL)

Did I say free? O yes I did! A while ago I lost my cork phone case. I seriously have no clue where I could have left it. I searched all over the place, but it just seemed to have vanished from the face of the earth. Anyhow, I was thinking about making a new one. And I did not make one but five, to match every outfit, mood or general urge for colour! But if you look closely, you can see that it isn’t made out of ordinary single crochets. Instead I used a stitch called the Herringbone stitch. These stitches are slanted, hence the name. It’s a very textured stitch and feels pretty sturdy, perfect for a protective phone sock!

You don’t need much. If you fancy an ombre case, use 4 tones of the same colour. I prefer cotton because it’s durable, and I used Phildar Phil Coton 3 and some Lammy Rio for the tutorial. I also used a 3,5 mm crochet needle for this yarn.

Keep in mind that every phone size is different and you can expect a tiny bit of trial and error to get it to fit your particular phone. However, the pattern is easy to modify and you can see early on if your phone fits. I made this fit for my phone, a HTC one. According to the almighty internet its dimensions are: 14 cm x 6,8 cm x 1 cm (5,5″ x 2,7″ x 0,4 “). If your phone is slightly thicker, don’t bother adjusting the pattern . The case stretches a little bit so it will fit snuggly! If your phone is larger (especially in height), you might want to consider adding one extra row for every colour to cover your entire phone.

Row 1:

Take your darkest shade and crochet 13 chains (12 + 1 for turning).

Row 2:

Start in the second chain from the hook. A Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC) is pretty easy. Yarn over, insert needle through chain. Pull back, and pull through first two hoops on the loop. Then yarn over again and pull yarn through the remaining loop. The first stitch will look pretty normal, however when you continue this way you will see the stitches leaning forward!

Make 11 HHDC. In the last stitch, make 4 HHDC. You will now turn over to the other side.

Make 10 HHDC on the other side of the chains. In the last stitch (which is the first of this row), make 3 more HHDC.

In total you will have 28 HHDC.

Row 3:

Now place a stitchmarker or different strand of yarn through your first stitch to remember where your row starts. Continue to crochet into the V’s of the HHDCs of the previous row. Crochet 13 HHDC. Then crochet 2 HHDC in the same stitch. make 14 HHDCs in the next stitches, and then again 2 in the last stitch. This will give you a total of 31 HHDC.

Row 4-9:

Now it’s time for the easy part. Just HHDC around for 6 rows. You’re working in a spiral upward. Halfway through, you can check if your phone fits. If so, great job! If not, you can adjust the beginning chain to adjust for the width of your phone.

If you’re done with the six rows of HHDC, slip stitch through the next stitch and cut your yarn. I always make my sixth row a few stitches short, so my change of colour will be in the back of the case rather than on the side.

Row 10-15:

Take your next, lighter shade. Join with a slip stitch a couple of stitches before where you ended your last colour. HHDC in the same stitch, and then crochet six rows in this shade. You can skip the slip stitch you made when ending the with the previous colour. This just helps you to prevent the jog in colour from being to harsh. I like to think of this as the middle course between having to weave in ends every row and having a harsh colour change. I use it often!

Row 16-21:

Repeat the instructions for row 10-15 with a new lighter shade.

Row 22-27:

Repeat the instructions for row 10-15 with your lightest shade. When you’re finished, make two slip stitches and cut yarn. Now you can weave in all your ends!
