Free Crochet Pattern: Brickwork Baby Blanket | Brick Stitch

The Brickwork blanket works like magic! Its simple yet stylish brick-inspired pattern adds a modern touch while keeping little ones warm and comfortable. This blanket is exceptionally suitable for cuddles, naps or just on-the-go.

If you are a beginning crocheter, you can make this blanket. The pattern also contains a written diagram to help you visualise the stitches.

Foundation rows

I cut the yarn at every colour change. It has many ends to weave in, but nothing an episode of Netflix can't handle - I find it makes for a neater result.

However, you can also decide not to cut the yarn and carry it along the right side of your blanket. Make sure to crochet over any loose strands while working the first round of your edging!

Rows 3-10 form the pattern repeat. Repeat the pattern repeat until you run out of Colour B. Finish with either Row 4 or Row 8.

Border

Round 1 (RS)Join Colour A with a ss in any st on a short side. Ch1, 1hdc in each st to end, ch2, rotate blanket 90 degrees. Continue on long side. 1hdc in same st, 1hdc in the side of each row to end of side. Ch2, rotate blanket 90 degrees. 1hdc in each ch, ch2, rotate blanket 90 degrees. 1hdc in same st, 1hdc in the side of each row to end of side. Ch2, rotate blanket 90 degrees. 1hdc in same st, 1hdc in each st to beginning of round. Join to first round with ss.[216 hdc on long sides, 165 hdc on short sides]

If you feel you have too many stitches in your border, you can make hdc2tog’s every here and there instead of hdc’s in every stitch. You can also do this in the further rounds, if your border is still flaring out.

Border (cont.)

Fasten off all ends and block your blanket to size.

Adjusting the size

You can easily adjust the size of the blanket. Heightwise, simply add more row repeats as stated in the pattern. Each brick row adds 2.5cm (1 in) in height.

To make the blanket wider, add multiples of 10 chains to the starting chain, for example, 176 chains or 186 chains. Each added 10 chains creates one extra brick, which adds approximately 5.5 cm (2.2 in) to your blanket. You don’t have to alter the pattern when you change the width. Instead, repeat the pattern instructions between * and ; and a different number of times.
