Techniques

In this section I like to explain in a little more detail then another free crochet pattern might, it's to really help you understand what's going on. A lot of people think they need a video tutorial, but what they really need is to see what's going on in detail.

If you pay close attention to what's going on, you'll understand that crochet over chains has a multitude of uses far beyond just a few crochet ornaments. I hope the extra details help you understand better, and make this a fun project for the holiday season.

Crocheting over chains

Hold the chain over the bottom of the tree(or other sections of your tree, if you’re in Row 24 or 40) (photo 1). Sc in the st of the last row of your tree trunk/previous section, catching the chain in your single crochet (photo 2-3). It’s similar to tapestry crochet where you catch the other threads, only this time it’s a chain. Continue until you’ve reached the last stitch on the base of the tree, then crochet in the remaining chains again. It's so easy it doesn't even need a video tutorial!

Diagram

As I've already said above, you can do whatever you like with these flat trees. It's a great way to use your scrap yarn or it can also be a fun way to try out different things as it uses only a small amount of yarn. The diagram below is part of the free pattern. If you print it out in black and white, you can use sharpies to make it your own with your own colors!
