Happy World animal day! My poor kitty cats have to spend this day alone as I’m currently enjoying my holiday in Spain (no worries, somebody is feeding them while we’re gone!) So to give them the smallest feeling of festivity, I made a couple of mini mice for them to play with!
The mini mice are approx 5-6 cm in length (depending on how tight you crochet) and use just a tiny amount of yarn. I used Scheepjes‘ Sunkissed (grey: Rock pool/001, blue: Beach hut blue/018) which is 100% cotton, available from Deramores and Woolwarehouse. I figured it could withstand those sharp cat claws better than acryl or wool!
- a 3,5 mm crochet hook (US Size E/4)
- stuffing (I used regular polyfibre stuffing, but if you’re afraid your cats will completely destroy the toy you might want to keep from this and use something natural. Maybe some hay?)
- Yarn needle
Pattern (US terms)
sc6 in magic loop.
R1: sc2 in each sc (12).
R2: *sc2 in 1sc, sc1*, repeat between ** 5 times (18).
R3: *sc2 in 1sc, sc2*, repeat between ** 5 times (24).
R4-8: sc 24 (24).
R9: *dec1, sc2*, repeat between ** 5 times (18).
R10-12: sc18 (18).
R13: *dec1, sc1*, repeat between ** 5 times (12).
R14-15: sc12 (12).
Now insert the filling in the mice. Stuff it untill you think it won’t fit anymore and then stuff some more!
R16: *dec1*, repeat between ** 5 times (6).
fasten off. Weave the end through last round a couple of times. It will make it a little bit pointy, giving the mice a real ‘nose’.
sc 4 in magic loop. ch1, turn.
R1: sc2 in each sc, ch1, turn (8).
R2: ss in each sc (8).
sew the ears to the body, approx. where R14 is. If you sew the ends of the ears a little bit closer together the ear will take a concave shape like in the picture.
Cut a piece of yarn of approx. 40cm. Thread a needle and sew it through the magic loop with which you started the body. Then start knotting the yarn over and over again. Snip off the tiny ends. If you feel fancy, make a couple of tails in rainbow colours!
And to prove cats really love your handiwork: this happened in about 3 seconds after Tiny Cat spotted the mouse. It was taken to its lair, never to be seen again.
