Primrose Blanket

Today I want to share with you the tutorial for the Primrose blanket. It’s divided up into three parts. The making of the flowers, the joining and the edging. It’s going to be a comprehensive tutorial but no worries, after two flowers you get the hang of it and you’ll be finishing your own blanket in no time! And the best part is, the flowers are a continuous pattern so with each flower you only have 2 ends to darn in! The pattern is written in US terms.

Materials and preparation

Repeat formats

*…; rep to end — Crochet the instructions after * and then repeat that section to the end of the row or round.
[…] — Indicates the amount of stitches at the end of a row or round.
(…) in same st/sp — Indicates that all instructions between brackets are worked in the same stitch or space.

Crochet pattern

Primrose Flowers

With Colour A, make a magic ring.

Centre ring

Round 1 (RS)Ch3 (counts as first dc), 15dc in ring, join with a ss in third ch.[16 dc]

Chain-space round

Round 2 (RS)Ch4 (counts as 1 dc + 1 ch), *1dc in next st, ch1; repeat from * until end of the round, join with ss in third ch. The piece might be a bit concave at this point, but it will straighten out in the next round.[16 dc, 16 ch]

Small petals

Round 3 (RS)Ss to first intermediate sp. Ch3 (counts as first dc), 2dc in same sp, skip next dc, 3dc in next sp, 1sc in next dc (this creates the separate petals), *3dc in sp, skip dc, 3dc in next sp, 1sc; repeat from * until end of round, join with ss in first ss of round.[48 dc, 8 sc]

Petal backbone

Round 4 (RS)You're now going to create the backbone for the next row of petals. Ch2, 1sc in skipped dc from Round 3, *ch5, skip next dc (the one with sc of previous round), 1sc in next dc; repeat from * until end of round joining your last ch5 to the first sc of round (so skip the ch2 with which you began your round). The back of your flower should now look like a wheel with spokes.[8 ch-5 sps, 8sc]

Large petals

Round 5 (RS)We're now going to make the bigger petals. Ss into the next ch-5 sp. Ch3 (counts as first dc), 9dc in same ch-sp, 1sc in next sc, *10dc in ch-sp, 1sc in next sc; repeat from * to end of round, join with ss in first ss. Fasten off.[80 dc, 8 sc]

Well done! The flowers are now complete. Now you can go ahead and make a whole bunch of them so you can complete your Primrose Blanket!

Joining

The flowers are joined with the Invicta extra. I wanted to give the blanket a ‘lacy’ feel, so I decided to go with a chain-join. My blanket is made up out of 10 x 16 flower blocks.

First Flower

Joining round (RS)Locate the fifth and sixth dc in a petal (indicated with arrow). Join Colour B there with ss, *ch3, 1sc in same sp (corner loop made), ch7, 1sc in next petal between fifth and sixth dc, ch3, 1sc in same sp; repeat from * to end of round, join last ch7 with a ss into first ch of round. Your shape may be a little round instead of square, but this will be corrected afterwards when you block your rows. Fasten off.

Subsequent flowers

When working your Joining round for subsequent flowers, join in corner loops with ss in the adjacent ch3-loop(s) of other flowers (indicated with arrow). Fasten off after each flower.

Border

Please note that the border on the photos below is made on a small sample of flowers.

Chain-loop round

Round 1 (RS)Join with ss in any sc of joining round, *ch8 to join of 2 flowers, 1ss in each loop of join, ch8, 1ss in next sc; repeat from * to corner of blanket, (1ss, ch4, 1ss) in corner loop of blanket. Repeat from * for all sides of the blanket, join with ss in first ch. Cut yarn.

First hdc round

Round 2 (RS)Join colour B with ss in a ch-sp, *14hdc in each ch-sp to corner loop, ch1, (1sc, ch4, 1sc) in corner loop; repeat from * for each side of the blanket, join with ss in first ss. Cut yarn.

Final rounds

Round 3 (RS)Join Colour B with a ss between seventh and eighth hdc of previous round, *(ch10, ss in between seventh and eighth hdc of next hdc-bow) until corner loop, (1ss, ch4, 1ss) in corner loop of blanket; repeat from * for all sides of the blanket, join with ss in first ch. Cut yarn.

Round 4 (RS)Join Colour B in any ch-sp with a ss, 16hdc in each ch-sp to corner loop, ch1, (1sc, ch4, 1sc) in corner loop; repeat from * for each side of the blanket, join with ss in first ss. Cut yarn.

Round 5 (RS)Join Colour B with ss between eighth and ninth hdc in any hdc-bow of previous round, 1sc in same st, *(ch8, 1sc in between eighth and ninth hdc of next bow) until corner loop, ch5, 1dc in corner loop, ch5, 1sc in between eighth and ninth hdc of next bow, ch5, 1sc in between eighth and ninth hdc of next bow; repeat from * for all sides of the blanket, join with ss in first sc. Fasten off, weave in all ends.

Note: If you find that the blanket is really pulling around the corners, try ch 6 instead of 5.
