We all love a traditional Granny Square. With its 3dc clusters, perfectly spaced and joined conventionally with black or cream yarn. They can be stunning and are a cornerstone pattern of crocheters.
However, there's so much more to Granny Squares than just the classic variation. By playing around with shapes, stitches, and colours, you can transform one of the most traditional patterns into something modern.
I've rounded up several patterns to inspire you. Let's take a look!
Modern granny square patterns
1. Spinwheel Blanket

The Spinwheel Blanket by Rachele from Cypress Textiles is a stunning example of how a change of colours can update a pattern. A striking colour and pattern combination gives the granny squares a 21st-century look. And, it's a free crochet pattern!
2. Triple Puff Granny Square

The Triple Puff Square by Emmy+Lien uses modern colours and a change of centre to update this Granny. Wouldn't this look stunning combined with white borders? The pattern is available for free.
3. Hooded Baby Blanket

By combining grey with a neon border, this blanket (complete with a hoodie!) adds a perfect modern touch to any kid's blanket collection. And we all know, they need a lot! The pattern is available for free over at Make and Do Crew.
4. Colour Work Granny Squares

By experimenting with the colour placement, Hooked by Robin has managed to create an entirely different Granny Square! Rainbow looks stunning, but can you imagine how this would look in trend colours such as burgundy red or ochre yellow? I think it would be stunning for a vest, blanket and any accessory!
5. Granny Square Zipper Canvas Bag

B-hooked Crochet shows that you don't have to change much about a Granny square to give it that modern vibe. This crochet pouch features a zipper and colour-coordinated buttons to emphasise the pink yarn. Simply stunning. The full DIY tutorial is on the B-hooked Crochet blog.
6. Origami Blanket

I don't want to toot my own horn too much, but I think my Origami Blanket fits this theme perfectly. By using two-toned squares interspersed with white in double crochet, the blanket has a granny-esque vibe with a modern twist. It's a free crochet pattern, with schematics and tutorial.
7. 4-color granny square

Well hello there, trendcolours! I can absolutely see these squares transformed into a modern statement blanket. The pattern is versatile, allowing you to make it as large as you want. Hop over to the free crochet tutorial over at Loopara.
8. Maple Leaf Granny Square

This pattern takes the traditional solid Granny Square and adds a colourful maple leaf border around it. Clever, and ever so stunning in variegated yarn! The pattern is a video tutorial from Mushyy over at Youtube. Have fun!
9. Granny Pinwheel Blanket

The Granny Pinwheel Blanket at My Crochetory captures the traditional pinwheel quilt pattern in a bold colour combination. I'm a fan! The pattern is up on the My Crochetory Blog.
10. Giant Granny Square Blanket

This Giant Granny Square Blanket by Lulu Loves is easy enough to make over and over again. Choose your own bold colour combination, or play around with smaller squares and join them - it's up to you! The free pattern is available on Lulu's blog.
