Baby Rainbow Sampler 2 | Free crochet pattern

The Baby Rainbow Sampler Blanket 2 is a small version of the Big Rainbow Sampler Blanket 2. It features all the different stitches used in the original blanket, just smaller. It's a great project for an ambitious beginner who wants to learn more crochet stitches and perfect for gifting to your loved ones. This blanket is a journey in itself!

Materials and preparation

The pattern is available in two colourways: A Organicon rainbow colourway, and a Catona gradient colourway. Instructions for both colourways are included in the pattern. Be aware that they do use different amounts of each colour for each version.

Organicon blanket measures 110 x 85 cm (43 x 33½ in) after blocking. Catona blanket measures 122 x 94 cm (48 x 37 in)

Repeat formats

*….; rep from * once/twice/3x — Crochet the instructions after * and then repeat that section a further number of times as indicated.
(…) once/twice/3x — Crochet the instructions between brackets the total number of times indicated.
[…] — Indicates the amount of stitches at the end of a row or round.
(…) in same st/sp — Indicates that all instructions between brackets are worked in the same stitch or space.

Notes

The pattern for this blanket is long. To keep track of where you are, I’ve divided it into different parts. Each part introduces a new section with Techniques and also contains a crochet diagram.
In most rows you’ll make a ch1 before turning your blanket. This is a turning chain and does not count as a stitch. If you find a ch1 is too small, you can also make a ch2. This depends on how tight you crochet.

Granny Stripe section 2 (Rows 19-22)

A new Granny Stripe section. They’re great for adding some space between other, more solid stitches!

Row 19 (RS)Join Colour D with a ss in the first stitch, ch3 (counts as first dc), 1dc in same stitch, *skip 2 stitches, 3dc in next stitch; repeat from * another 46 times, skip 2 stitches, 2dc in last stitch, cut yarn, turn.[47 Granny clusters with 3 dc, 2 clusters with 2 dc, 145 dc in total]

Row 20 (WS)Join Colour E with a ss in first stitch, ch3 (counts as first dc), *3dc in space between clusters of previous row; repeat from * another 47 times, 1dc in third ch of begin-ch3 of previous row. Cut yarn and turn.[48 Granny clusters with 3 dc, 2 dc, 146 dc in total]

You might have noticed that this row has 146 stitches. We’ll fix that in the next row.

Jacob’s Ladder section 1 (Rows 23-33)

In Dutch, rays of sunshine peering through clouds on a gloomy day are called Jacob’s Ladders. You can see where this stitch gets its name, right? For this stitch, you make loops of chains in each row that are knitted up and fastened in the final row of this section.

Setting up the ladders

Row 23 (RS)Join Colour D with a ss in the first stitch, ch1, 1hdc in the same st, 5hdc, (1hdc, ch5, 1ss in last hdc), *11hdc, (1hdc, ch5, 1ss in last hdc); repeat from * another 10 times, 6hdc, ch1, turn.[12 ch-5 loops in hdc, 133 hdc]

The hdc in which you slip-stitched the five chains is now called ch5-hdc.

Building the ladders

Row 24 (WS)6hdc (you end up on the right side of the ch5-hdc), ch5, *skip the ch-5 loop of the previous row, 12hdc, ch5; repeat from * another 10 times, skip the ch-5 loop of the previous row, 7hdc, cut yarn, turn.[12 ch-5 spaces, 145 hdc]

Now, ladder up all Jacob’s ladders. If they get undone, secure them with a stitch marker. Make sure to ladder them up on the RS! You don’t want to make the same mistake I made (twice).

Laddering up

Row 30 (WS)6hdc, 1ss in top of first ladder, skip st after ladder, *11hdc, 1ss in top of ladder, skip st after ladder; repeat from * another 10 times, 6hdc, cut yarn, turn.[12 ss, 133 hdc]

If skipping the stitch after the ladder leaves too big of a gap, you can decide to make a hdc2tog in the first and second stitch after the ladder. It leads to the same result (i.e. 11 stitches in between slip stitches).
